Cette étude révèle comment les caractéristiques philologiques telles que la nomenclature, l'archaïsme et les échos de formes poétiques du vieil anglais, furent rendues dans certaines traductions publiées en langues germaniques et latines. Elle démontre comment la théorie actuelle de la traduction basée sur une approche herméneutique peut expliquer les techniques de compensations des auteurs, comme l'utilisation des ressources historiques analogues dans les langues-cibles. Elle dévoile aussi comment ces traductions peuvent préserver les effets littéraires et poétiques. Ce faisant, elle passe également en revue les éléments stylistiques caractéristiques du texte source.
llan Turner est né en 1949, à Peterborough (Angleterre). Il devient lecteur dans les universités de Trier et de Basel de 1980 à 1985, à la suite d'un cursus en allemand et en études médiévales à Reading, et de linguistiques à Cambridge. Il a plus récemment enseigné l'anglais à l'allemand aux Universités de Newcastle et de Northumbria et à Newcastle College.
